Pepper ComputerProduct: Pepper Pad 2
Description: The Pepper Pad 2 is Pepper Computer’s simplified wireless
computer for consumers to use in the Digital Home or on the
go. They can browse the Web, IM, email, play music, videos
and games, edit and share photos, and run other collabora-tive
applications. It includes Wi-Fi, IR,20GB hard disk, large
color screen, QWERTY keypad, Bluetooth, USB 2.0, and
SD/MMC slots. The Pepper Pad 2 reference design is for
OEMs and broadband providers looking for a unique digital
media product.
DEMO says: There is a theme running through DEMOmobile this year — that
the industry is moving to a service-based computing paradigm.
Pepper Computer is a strong example of that trend. The Pepper
Pad 2 delivers a solid digital information and entertainment
experience without the expense, technology, and complexity
overhead of a full-blown PC. The device is well-suited to be a
companion piece to broadband services sold into consumer
households.
Market Outlook: Pepper targets the computer-challenged — intimidated by
Windows and the tech-competent — “Windows fatigued” suffer-er
with residential broadband. Wireless home networks are
growing — 214% in 2003 (In-Stat/MDR) and forecast to be
50M worldwide by 2007 (BWCS). There will be 125M
broadband subscribers worldwide in 2004 and 325M by
2008 (The Yankee Group).
Funding: Privately held
Competitors: Microsoft, PalmSource
