Description: OnAir Entertainment delivers live television to Wi-Fi-enabled lap-tops
and PDAs in public hot spots, including airports, train sta-tions,
hotels, convention centers, trains, and planes. The compa-ny
has developed a media server for hot spots that lets users
watch live satellite or cable television and video-on-demand
(VOD) content with full personal video recorder functionality, and
download music, movies, and games. The company is set to
deploy its servers in thousands of hot spots around the globe.
DEMO says: Tens of thousands of cafes, hotels, airline hospitality suites, and
coffee shops have become Wi-Fi hot spots in order to attract and
retain customers. But soon, low-cost or even free Internet access
won’t be enough of a draw to bring new customers through the
door. In time, it will be all about the applications the hot spot
offers on top of WiFi access. OnAir Entertainment offers a win-ning
on-demand television application that will give hot spot
owners a great offering for their customers.
Market Outlook: Goldman Sachs estimates there are currently 100M Wi-Fi users
worldwide. Wi-Fi use grew 70% in 2003. In-Stat/MDR estimates
95% of laptops sold in 2005 will have built-in Wi-Fi capability.
Funding: Initial funding from angel investors: $700,000. Series A was
VC-funded: $3M.
Competitors: There are no known competitors at this time. Potential competition
could come from makers of cable VOD servers.
