DEMO says: There is much ado about mobile entertainment, yet the bulk of
mobile games are (yawn) rather dull. Sorrent is the exception
providing highly graphical games for mobile devices. Today, the
company re-sets the bar, providing beautifully rendered graphics
and compelling content in games supported by more than 100
mobile handsets. In so doing, Sorrent re-positions the mobile
phone as a lifestyle device, competing effectively with dedicated
mobile gaming platforms.
Market Outlook: Wireless gaming is on its way to becoming a mass-market phe-nomenon.
IDC projects that U.S. revenue for mobile games will
rise to $1.4B in 2006. IDC also expects the number of wireless
gamers to grow from 7.9% of all U.S. wireless subscribers in
2003 to 34.7%, or 65.2M users, by 2008.
Funding: In July 2004, Sorrent raised $20M in its Series C financing led
by BA Venture Partners. BA Venture Partners joined Sorrent’s exist-ing
investors, New Enterprise Associates, Globespan Capital
Partners, and Sienna Ventures, in the round.
Competitors: mForma, Jamdat
